Celebrate Your Physicians on Doctors’ Day

Did you know the first Doctors’ Day was observed in 1933? We celebrate this day to recognize our physicians and their contributions to our country and our society.

Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, wanted a day to honor physicians and the noble work they do. On March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia, the first observance included mailing letters to doctors and placing flowers on the graves of deceased doctors. In 1958, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. Legislation was introduced in the House and the Senate to establish a national Doctors’ Day in 1990. President George W. Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.

How do you plan to say thank you to the physicians, surgeons, specialists, anesthesiologists and pediatricians who have impacted your life and the lives of your loved ones? Here are some popular ideas:

  • Send a personal thank-you note. If you happen to have a picture with your physician, include it in the card.
  • Order a small gift that your physician would appreciate.
  • Organize a healthy lunch delivery or send a gift card so your doctor can order lunch.
  • Place a red carnation on a deceased physician’s grave.
  • Use Doctors’ Day as a reminder to schedule a checkup. Your doctor will be proud!
