Take Care to Protect Yourself from Germs

If you cringe every time someone coughs or sneezes, you are not alone.  No one likes to get sick, but it’s inevitable this time of year.  Germs can spread easily.

Fortunately, there are a number of simple things you can do to limit the spread of germs and infections:

  • Get a flu shot. An annual vaccine is recommended for everyone ages 6 months or older.
  • Stay home from work or school if you become sick.
  • Eat healthfully and get plenty of sleep.
  • Wash your hands frequently! Use the CDC’s five-step method: Wet. Lather. Scrub for at least 20 seconds (sing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” to help you gauge the time). Rinse. Dry.
  • When you can’t wash your hands immediately, use hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially with dirty hands.
  • Throw away all used tissues, and then immediately wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer.
  • Use Lysol wipes or a solution containing bleach frequently to clean countertops, sinks and faucets, toilets, etc. Don’t forget to regularly wipe down remote controls, light switches, door handles and computer keyboards and mice, also.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick when possible.

Unfortunately, in spite of your best efforts, you still might find yourself sick at some point. If symptoms persist call your healthcare provider for further evaluation and recommendations.

Wishing you good health in 2018!
